What is Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT?

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as "tapping," is a therapeutic technique developed in the 1990s by Gary Craig and is based on the premise that unresolved emotional issues are caused by disruptions in the body's energy system. EFT aims to address these emotional disturbances by tapping on specific meridian points on the body to restore the flow of energy and promote emotional healing.

In addition, EFT is a powerful stress reduction technique that has been proven by extensive research to reduce cortisol in the body (the stress hormone) and can also affect positive changes in our brain waves.  EFT is used not only to address emotional challenges, but also mental imbalances, and even physical pain that a person may be suffering from.

A valuable tool when one is feeling anxious, overwhelmed, depressed, or when a person is in physical discomfort, “tapping” can be utilized for almost anything that has an emotional charge. This includes current stresses; worries about the future; phobias; nightmares; as well as insomnia, physical maladies, and chronic illnesses, such as chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia.

In more advanced techniques, EFT can also assist in desensitizing our traumatic past memories by returning us to earlier challenges where the roots of a detrimental life pattern may have emerged.  Once the roots have been addressed, often the general destructive pattern can be released, as well as the painful emotional charges around the past troublesome events. This catharsis can prevent us from being triggered in the present, and can help us live a more peaceful, thriving, and joyful life!

What Steps are Involved in the EFT Process?

The technique is relatively simple and involves the following steps:

  1. Identifying the Issue: We begin by identifying the specific emotional issue you want to address. It can be anything from stress and anxiety, to fear, sadness, anger, or limiting beliefs.

  2. Setup Statement: We create a setup statement that acknowledges the issue and accepts yourself despite the problem. The statement typically follows the pattern of "Even though I have this [emotion/issue], I deeply and completely love and accept myself."

  3. Tapping Sequence: While repeating the setup statement, you will use your fingertips to tap on a specific meridian on the body referred to as the "karate chop" point on the side of the hand.

  4.  Reminder Phrase: As you tap on specific points, you will use a shorter reminder phrase to continue acknowledging the issue. For example, "this anxiety," "this fear," or "this sadness.” Standard tapping points are the top of the head, eyebrows, side of the eyes, under the eyes, under the nose, the chin, collarbone, and under the arm.

  5. Reassess: After completing the tapping sequence, you will take a moment to reassess the intensity of the emotional issue. On a scale from 0 to 10, you will determine if the intensity has decreased.

  6. Repeat if Necessary: If the emotional intensity hasn't decreased to a satisfactory level, you can repeat the tapping sequence, adjusting the setup statement and reminder phrase as needed.

What are the Benefits of EFT or Tapping?

  1. Stress Reduction: EFT can help reduce stress and anxiety levels by promoting a state of relaxation and calmness. Tapping on specific points can activate the body's relaxation response, leading to decreased stress hormones.

  2. Emotional Regulation: EFT is often used to address and release negative emotions such as fear, anger, sadness, or guilt. By tapping on the meridian points, individuals may experience emotional relief and a greater sense of emotional well-being.

  3. Anxiety Management: Many people find EFT beneficial for managing anxiety and panic attacks. Tapping can help individuals cope with anxious thoughts and physical sensations associated with anxiety.

  4. Pain Relief: EFT may be used as a complementary technique to manage physical pain. Some individuals report a reduction in pain intensity after using EFT.

  5. Enhanced Self-Acceptance: EFT often includes affirmations of self-acceptance and self-compassion. Practicing these affirmations while tapping can promote a more positive self-image and boost self-esteem.

  6. Improved Sleep: EFT can aid in improving sleep quality by addressing stress and anxiety that may interfere with restful sleep.

  7. Reduced Trauma Symptoms: EFT is sometimes used as part of trauma therapy to help individuals process traumatic experiences and reduce the emotional impact of trauma.

  8. Overcoming Phobias: Tapping can be effective in addressing specific fears and phobias, helping individuals gradually reduce their fear responses.

  9. Better Coping Skills: EFT can provide individuals with a practical and accessible tool for managing their emotions and coping with challenging situations.

  10. Increased Mindfulness: Tapping requires individuals to focus on their emotions and thoughts while performing the technique, promoting greater self-awareness and mindfulness.

  11. Potential for Positive Behavior Change: Some people find that EFT helps them address negative thought patterns and behaviors, leading to positive changes in their lives.

Important Note:  While many people report positive results and find EFT helpful for managing emotions and reducing stress, it should not be used as a replacement for professional medical or psychological treatment.

What Will Happen in an EFT Session with Terri?

Terri will first discuss with you what areas of your life are causing you stress or discomfort, and then prioritize where you would like to begin with EFT.  She will teach you the "Basic Recipe"-- the primary EFT procedure which includes the order and pattern of the various acupoints used in tapping. (The Basic Recipe will provide you with the self-help tools to use tapping on your own at any time.)

If interested, a client can work with Terri in future sessions using more advanced EFT techniques to delve into past traumas to alleviate suffering from any established negative patterns in your present life.  Terri will guide you through the techniques and provide a safe and healing container for you to release the old emotional pain, blockages, and burdens, so that you can feel lighter, renewed, and reinvigorated in your life.
